Western Music

Piano

The Piano is one of the most popular instruments in the world. Widely used in classical and jazz music for solo performances, ensemble use, chamber music and accompaniment, the piano is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal.

It is a musical instrument played mainly by pressing a key on a keyboard which causes a felt-covered hammer to strike steel strings. When the key is released, a damper stops the string's vibration and the tone.

Much of the most widely admired classical music, for example, that of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms, was written for piano.

During the 19th century, particularly African-American composers, developed new musical genres such as Ragtime music, popularized by composers such as Scott JoplinPianos have also been used in rock and roll by entertainers such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elton John, and Billy Joel to name just a few.

Our piano courses prepare students to enter examinations with confidence and develop advanced artistic solo performance skills.

Music arrangement on the electronic keyboard

Prerequisite to this course is previous experience playing piano, as well as basic knowledge of music theory. We will provide a specialized teacher for composing music using the computer and the electronic keyboard.

Guitar

In central Asia, instruments like the guitar were known 5,000 years ago. The word tar itself means "string" in the ancient Persian language. The modern word, guitar, was adopted into English from the Spanish word guitarra and the Latin word cithara from the earlier Greek Kithara.

The guitar was considered to be merely a simple folk instrument used for strumming to popular songs in its early days, but in later centuries, the guitar was cultivated by players and composers within the courts of princes and kings. The concert guitar of today was developed in the 19th century. The guitar with six single strings became the norm.

Today's concert guitarists are expected to play a wide variety of music by composers from both the past and the present. To do this they have to study and master a wide variety of techniques. The Spaniard, Andres Segovia (1893-1987), was the first guitarist to take the classical guitar into the modern concert world of large audiences, sound recording and film.

We offer individual lessons of assorted styles, i.e. rock, jazz, classical, and flamenco. We also offer group lessons to develop awareness for uniting sounds and expressive dynamics. Children from 6-7 years can start learning the Guitar.

The Violin

The violin is a string instrument with four strings. It is the smallest, highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola, cello, and double bassThe violin, while it has ancient origins, acquired most of its modern characteristics in 16th-century Italy.

The violinist produces sound by drawing a bow across one or more strings (which may be stopped by the fingers of the other hand to produce a full range of pitches), by plucking the strings (with either hand), or by a variety of other techniques.

The violin is used in a wide variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz, folk music, and rock and roll. The violin has come to be played in many non-Western music cultures all over the world. Indian, Pakistani, Turkish and Arabic pop music is filled with the sound of violins, both soloists and ensembles.

Violins make up a large part of an orchestra, and are usually divided into two sections, known as the first and second violins. Composers often assign the melody to the first violins, while second violins play harmony, accompaniment patterns or the melody an octave lower than the first violins. A string quartet similarly has parts for first and second violins, as well as a viola part, and a bass instrument, such as the cello.

The popularity of crossover music beginning in the last years of the 20th century has brought the violin back into the popular music arena, with both electric and acoustic violins being used by popular bands. Vanessa Mae uses classical music with her electric violin.

Starting from the age of 5, children begin with learning how to hold the violin bow correctly, playing on the strings to produce pure and rich sound without touching them with the left hand. Following these two important stages, the teacher will introduce where and how to touch the strings to produce the exact tone the student reads from notes. This is essential practice to strengthen the hands as well as reading printed notes.

Cello

The cello is a string instrument with four strings played with a bow. It is a member of the violin family of musical instruments. The cello is used as a solo instrument, in chamber music, in a string orchestra, and as a member of the string section of an orchestra. It is the second largest bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest. The cello has been described as the closest sounding instrument to the male human voice. Among the most well-known compositions for the cello are Johann Sebastian Bach's six unaccompanied Suites.

The cello has also recently appeared in major hip-hop and R & B performances, such as singers Rihanna and Ne-Yo's performance at the American Music Awards.

Flute

The Western concert flute is a transverse (or side-blown) woodwind instrument that is closed at the blown end. The instrument is played by blowing a stream of air over the embouchure hole. The pitch is changed by opening or closing keys that cover circular tone holes (there are typically 16 tone holes). Opening and closing the holes produces higher and lower pitches. The direction and intensity of the air stream also affects the pitch, timbre, and dynamics.

The dimensions and key system of the modern western concert flute are almost completely the work of the great flautist, composer, acoustician and silversmith, Theobald Boehm, who patented his system in 1847. It was immediately popular, and spread worldwide in just a few years. A child can learn to play from the age of 7, since creating clear sound requires a certain physical strength.

Drums and other Percussion instruments

Percussion is the basis of any band performance. The drummer has an essential role as all the performers depend on his ability to set and keep tempo through a song, making him the actual leader of the band.

A drum kit consists of different sized drums as well as cymbals, and is played with a variety of drum sticks and snares to produce a variety of sound.

We provide capable teachers so children can learn to play in a short time with the school band or in a band with their friends.

Chamber Music

This is a form of classical music written for a small group of instruments often from the violin family. The word (circle or chamber) means that this music can be played in smaller spaces giving an intimate atmosphere to the music.

Chamber music requires different playing skills than solo or with an orchestra, giving equal importance to each instrument. Like a conversation, players listen and respond to each other as each takes the lead at a time. This develops the performing sense of the student as well as encouraging them to participate in a band, whether it’s classical, pop, rock or jazz, etc.

Orchestra

A large group of musicians playing various instruments. Playing in a large orchestra helps students to develop listening skills and co-operation in a group. A large number of students are afraid to play solo in front of an audience. Group performances aid to build self-confidence in the security of a company of friends and strengthen and develop individual playing skills.

Students are encouraged to perform in the monthly concerts, end of the season concerts and other events that we organize, giving them the confidence to perform well in examinations.

Voice Lessons

This program contains voice lessons to develop singing skills like breathing technique, toning, pronunciation and tone interval. The purpose from these lessons is to strengthen and develop the voice  with the help of specialized teachers who have been performing in opera for years.
